Kid-friendly TV

If your household is anything like ours during the Lockdown then your TV is likely to be on a little more than “normal”. I hit a little wobble the other day when I walked into the lounge after being stuck in my office and Jordy had put the TV on by himself and was busy watching Goosebumps!!! Oh my gosh I was so upset with myself and the situation. Shortly thereafter, like a gift from above, I recieved this mail from the team at NETFLIX, and they shared a list of kid-friendly programs and movies, as well as safety features for us parents to ensure we know what they are consuming, even when we are frantically on deadline or trying to keep our businesses afloat, (in between trying to homeschool our kids!!).

Anyway, I read the mail but in the interest of time felt I might not get a chance to share it with you guys, however a day or two later one of the movies in the list came up as recommended to watch. Seeing as it was recommended on this list I put it on for us to watch as a family and we all LOVED it! It has become my kids’ favourite movie and they ask to watch it daily now, and so having had that experience I thought you mamas may find the same comfort from me sharing this list, and so felt it was worth the time to get it up.

Here is a list of kid-friendly TV available on NETFLIX:

This is the movie we watched as a family:

WWE inspired ‘The Main Event’ film

This Good Friday, WWE and Netflix will release a feel-good family film that’ll have everyone from kid to grandma, glued to the screen. ‘The Main Event’ is a kid’s fantasy meets family-friendly sports film, that follows an 11-year old played by Seth Carr (young Killmonger in Black Panther), in his quest to live his dream of becoming a WWE superstar.

The movie also stars Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris, Martin) as the 11 year old’s grandmother. A tale of a kid living his dream similar to 2002’s Like Mike with a dash of Jim Carrey’s The Mask, the film can be fun for the whole family.

The Main Event

When 11-year-old Leo Thompson (Seth Carr) discovers a magical wrestling mask that grants him super strength, he uses it to enter a WWE competition. With the support of his grandmother (Tichina Arnold), Leo will do whatever it takes to achieve his dream of becoming a WWE Superstar. Can one kid win it all, in the face of epic challengers in the ring? Directed by Jay Karas, THE MAIN EVENT co-stars Adam Pally, Ken Marino, and features WWE Superstars Kofi Kingston, The Miz and Sheamus.

Starring Seth Carr, Tichina Arnold, Adam Pally, and Ken Marino, featuring WWE Superstars Kofi Kingston, The Miz and Sheamus.

SAFETY:

Everyone loves entertainment. And everyone loves accessing it on their TVs, laptops or phones. But while we want entertainment options that the entire family can enjoy, NETFLIX also know that not every movie or show or documentary might be for audiences of all ages. Since all families are different, parents need a wide choice of films and shows – as well as the controls – to make the right decisions for their families. That’s why NETFLIX invests in a wide choice of films and shows featuring new characters, cultures and stories from all over the world – from Klaus to Mighty Little Bheem to Alexa and Katie. It’s also why there are controls for parents to make the right decisions for their families on NETFLIX. One of the things that you can now do right away is set a PIN for each of your NETFLIX profiles. That way, only you can access it. Meanwhile, you can set age-appropriate maturity settings for your kids’ profiles, so they only watch shows and movies suitable for their age. You can access all these options from the “Profile and Parental Controls” hub by going to “Account” settings.

Here are a few things to know:

  1. Create different profiles for different ages

Did you know that you can create up to 5 profiles on Netflix? And that, for each profile, you can set the maturity level so it only show age-appropriate shows and movies? Simply go to the Profiles page to add a new profile by clicking on “Add Profile”.

You will see that a “kids” profile looks different, with an all-white background, and a selection that’s only appropriate for kids.

2. Discover the “Profile and Parental Controls” hub

All the profile-level settings you might need to control — for your and your kids’ account — is in one place. Access it from your Account settings. From language to content restriction by age, and changing playback settings, you can do it all from this one place.

3. Set Viewing Restrictions

After you made a separate profile for your teenage kid, or younger child, it’s time to make sure they can only access films and shows appropriate for them.  Click on “Viewing Restrictions” from the Parental Controls hub, and select the right age group. Once you do this, that profile can only see content suitable for that age. Don’t worry, your kid can’t go in and change it. It needs the account password to access.

4. Set a Profile lock

You set an age-appropriate profile for your kid. So far, so good. But still worried that they might go into your profile instead and have access to all the shows and films. Simply set a 4-digit PIN for each Profile on your account. Click on “Change” under Profile Lock, select “require a PIN…”

and set a 4-digit PIN.

On the Profile page, you will now see a lock sign on your profile. And anyone trying to access it will be asked to enter the PIN.

Added tip: You want also want to select “Require PIN to add new profiles”. What this does is it prevents anyone else but you from creating a new profile. So your clever teenager isn’t adding a new profile with access to all shows and movies.

5. Control your playback settings

Want to prevent your kids from watching back-to-back episodes of a series? From “Playback settings” on your Profile Hub, simply de-select “autoplay next episode”. You can even choose not to autoplay previews on a profile, simply be deselecting “autoplay previews”.

6. Restrict specific titles

When you set age-wise profiles, Netflix does a pretty good job of deciding what shows and films are good for that age. But you can still decide that you don’t want your kid(s) to watch a particular title. From “Content Restrictions”, you can simply exclude a title, or a few of them, by adding them to the “title restrictions” list. It’s your family. And we think you know best what’s good for them.

7. See viewing history by profile

You can see what is being viewed from the kids’ profiles by hitting the drop down for the profile from “Profile and parental controls”, and selecting “viewing activity”. What you get is a list of movies and shows watched, by date.

Hopefully you found this helpful, thanks to NETFLIX for sharing this info!

Lots of love always, and especially at this time

xx

  1. Such valuable advice my Shanny – we are lucky for now that our Netflix access/remote is too complicated for the girls.
They can’t access Netflix without us but they are loving it too – we watched Babe, Babe Pig In The City and Charlotte’s Web already – and then HOP for Easter. And we all loved them x
