Our House Build | Coastal Timber

In concept stage of our house we had lots of ideas. There were loads of ideas of things we loved and hoped to try incorporate. I think I had hundreds of boards and pins on my Pinterest account, all individually dedicated to each space in the house. I had an idea of how I wanted to bring wood into the home to bring a more natural feel into the ‘chic’ decor style I was after. Black, white and gold can be a slightly harsh base from which to build your mood board, but by incorporating some natural elements like leather and wood can transform it into a chic yet warm and inviting living space.
It was all fairly simple to pin together mood boards of our dream of what the space should look like, but when these hopes & dreams were followed up with quotes and costings we just about cried ourselves to sleep at night… okay maybe that was just me…!

It wasn’t until we partnered with Coastal Timber that everything started to feel like our dream home may actually become a reality! Not only did they offer the best pricing in KZN, but their service was better than almost everyone we engaged with during the build process. Nothing was too great an ask for Warren and the Coastal Timber team. Whether it was requesting quotes for jobs we probably wouldn’t afford or urgently requiring more wood for an adhoc request, or even being a little too fussy saying the wood was too red (!!). Despite our somewhat painful requests we were never met with anything but the kindest responses and an above-and-beyond service level.

Thanks to Coastal Timber we were able to include Balau wood into our build, and I think you will agree it compliments the house style beautifully, and in many ways is one of the best features of the space.

Coastal Timber provided all the Balau wood, and Gavin from Dynemo Sundecks and his team expertly installed all of the following:

Outside Front Gate & Pergola – ENTRANCE:
The design of the house meant that there was a narrow entrance between two high (double storey) walls. In order to break the height we put a Balau pergola which worked beautifully to bring the height down and make it feel like more of an inviting entrance. The front gate (also Balau) also acts as a lovely entrance feature.

Inside feature wall: ENTERTAINMENT AREA EXTENDER:
The entire interior of the house was painted an off-white colour (which I love!), but in order to bring some warmth into the space, as well as with the idea of creating the feel of the inside & outside being one entertainment area, we had a Balau feature created inside the lounge and extending through the verandah. This beautiful idea came from local interior designer Kirsty Lindley. This wall was initially quoted using by someone else and came in much more than we could afford. Thankfully the Balau through Coastal Timber and installation by Dynemo Sundecks came in considerably cheaper and we were able to afford it. I really feel it is some of the best money we spent!

POOL DECKING:
Last but certainly not least was the entertainment decking which extended our entertainment area. This was a big stretch for us to afford, and we can honestly say we would never have managed to do it without the brilliant prices from Coastal Timber!

Something we are still hoping to do at some stage is to include a small pergola in a spot in our garden where it is a perfect sunset-watching space. Sunsets are my favourite part of the day, and I could imagine no better final addition to our home than a little outdoor seating area where we can sit together with a glass of wine and watch the sun set in all it’s golden goodness ✨

  1. Unbelievable! Friend thanks so much for such a great write up! Warren and I were blown away! Thank you πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ» πŸ–€

  2. That looks absolutely incredible! You’ve just given me a great idea. My hubby and I are downsizing and need to make the most of our new little spot. Did you put anything on top of the wooden pergola? See through plastic roof sheeting (To keep it dry?). Very curious … πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

    1. Hi Kim. Oh that’s awesome I’m so happy I helped you with some inspiration!
We actually didn’t put the plastic sheeting because that area is strangely protected from most rain between two high walls πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ but I know our Neighbours did a similar pergola over an entertainment area and used the plastic sheeting as well as some creepers… looks beaut x

    1. Ah I’m so glad to have helped in some small way my friend! Enjoy the process, and when it gets stressful just keep your eye on the prize – the best feeling in the world being in a space you dreamt into being

    2. Ah it’s the most stressful but also exciting time πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’› enjoy and shout if you have any questions on anything I may be able to help with 😘😘
