The Cavern: Berg at it’s best

Ever since we heard about the Cavern Resort & Spa in 2018 and paid it a visit, we have been enamoured with the place and it is an honour to share this special gem with you all. The Cavern, founded by Bill Carte in 1941, is still a family run business, and with that creates what I believe to be the heart of the resort. It is, in my opinion, far more special than a business-run resort with “one in one out” mentality. Megan & Hilton Bedingham run The Cavern with love & heart, and that can be felt throughout the resort. The family eats nightly in the same dining hall as guests, and with a weekly ‘snacks in the bar’, genuinely seem to care for making connections with their guests. See discount code at end of this post 🙂

An open letter to white mamas

On 2 June 2020 we stood together in unity and blacked out our social media with a movement that was, in my opinion, a well overdue deep-dive into issues that still plague our world. Being a white, priviledged mama raising white children in South Africa I have, especially in the past months, felt an incredible need to learn as much as possible, to enable me to share as much as possible so we are all empowered with knowledge and the know-how to DO better. That little black square that on the 2nd helped me feel like I was supporting, by the 3rd of June brought with it a deep guilt that I wasn’t doing enough. So on June 4th 2020, after wracking my brain on trying to figure out a way to be part of the change that we so need, I decided to ask for help. I reached out to a woman of colour who I highly respect and have grown to love; the gorgeous Leanne Dlamini.
Leanne graciously accepted the challenge and I received her message to us white mamas in my inbox today. It really touched me, enlightened me, and given me some pointers to help me do right by my children – to open their eyes and hearts, in order to do right by ALL children, here and abroad.

Before we get to Leanne’s open letter to all white mamas, I want to share an experience I had with Jackson. You will see that Leanne roasts me in her piece 😉 the back-story to that is; Long-story short, month-end May, just ahead of 2 June black out, our business’ driver drove our Gogo (nanny) and domestic workers both home for the weekend. As they drove away Jackson turned to me and said something that stuck me and made me feel as though I had failed him. He said, “Mommy it is so strange to see three brown people in a car”. He adores his Gogo more than anything in the world – his second mother, and even though his comment was full of naive innocence, my heart literally ached as the words left his lips. He has friends of colour at school. His best friend is coloured. But it was clear to me that from his observation, through his eyes, he was not seeing enough diversity. I knew instantly that needed to change.

Local Brands Gift Idea Guide for men

Celebrating the men of our homes is such an honour, and I thought what a better way than to celebrate them whilst also supporting small businesses who have survived lockdown by the skin of their figurative teeth 🙂
I hope you love the guide as much as I do and please do tag me in your purchases on Insta so I can reshare and know who you supported

What does generosity mean to you?

Generosity;
1. the quality of being kind and generous.

We know well the meaning of generosity, but what does it mean to you?
I believe that generosity is, at its core, an instinct to go above and beyond, in the selfless hope of genuinely improving another persons’s life. Cadbury Dairy Milk believes ‘There’s a glass & a half of generosity in everyone’. Now more than ever, there’s a real need for generosity and for us to give to our most vulnerable – our children. The reality is that despite what’s happening around us, now more than ever, our children deserve the precious gift of childhood. You might have seen the Cadbury Dairy Milk ‘The Little Generosity Shop’ and ‘GenerosiTrees’ activations that collected more than 100 000 pre-loved toys for orphaned and vulnerable children last year. Well, Cadbury Dairy Milk is once again calling on all South Africans to support orphaned and vulnerable children by facilitating their right to play. The wonderful news for us is that we can be a part of this – part of being generous – in one of the simplest ways imaginable!

10 Steps to ensure Mental Health Wellness during ‘lockdown’

The thought of enduring a country-wide lockdown for 21days (or more) naturally brings with it a large dose of anxiety. Some of us will be in lockdown with our families which is wonderful in many ways… but children who are home-bound for any period of time will become more irritable their siblings, frustrated with their surroundings and test us in many ways. Moms will have shorter fuses, naturally taking on the strain of what is happening in our nation, also feeling stifled by the lack of external input, as well as exhausted by having our kids on top of and around us allllllll day long. Not to mention the unusual dynamic of having Dad/hubby around 24/7! In most cases Dads are just not used to being home for this amount of time, and it’s not likely to be smooth sailing for the duration of this isolation period, for anyone. All round we are unified in facing something we’ve never faced before. Many of us are going to be heavily impacted financially by this lockdown, and that brings with it its own stress. Others of us are preparing to isolate alone, with no one to share this time with, and days will be very long. Each of us is going to cope with this in our own ways, and it’s really important that we do our very best to keep mentally strong & positive.

Laken Folster is a counselling psychologist who has very kindly shared some helpful advice on how to maintain a healthy mental state during this lockdown, how to cope and get through this with a positive mindset:

Fitchef | Review

In July I was asked to review the FitChef meals and I have been inundated by questions from you all asking how we found it and if I would recommend it! Justin and I were very kindly sent the 21 day couples challenge to try, and here are our thoughts:

Arrival:
It is safe to say that the order process and delivery as well as packaging of the FitChef meals impressed me from the minute the delivery man arrived with 4 (rather large) boxes, chilled and sealed.
Opening the boxes was one of the most exciting unboxes I have done this year, and I couldn’t stop grinning from ear-to-ear at the thought of not having to meal-plan, prep or cook for Justin and I for at least 21 days! Bliss!

#SpringInTheCity | Luxuria Lifestyle SA

Last Saturday, 7 September 2019, I flew to Johannesburg with butterflies in my belly in anticipation for the Luxuria South Africa Spring in the City event in collaboration with BMW Bavaria and 30 other luxury brands.

Upon arrival at the BMW Bavaria dealership the atmosphere was electric and exciting. Like orderly worker-bees driven by a common purpose, the Luxuria Lifestyle team, as well as multiple brands who partnered on the event, were focused and swift in tranforming a stunning car showroom into what would become the ultimate luxury event!

BMW i8 electric

I am a real BMW fan, so I was absolutley in my element watching these beautiful beasts gliding around the showroom in an attempt to make the best entrance possible for the expected guests. It was a treat seeing the new BMW i8 in action; I intentionally say ‘seeing’ and not hearing because this baby is electric and so very, veryyyy quiet. I feel the lightweight carbon-fibre gull wing doors make her look like she is a bird in flight. She is a real beauty! Maybe one day when I am big… 😉
