My Skin Care Routine | Serums

Something you may start to notice as you enter your 30s is that your skin looks less full. According to Dr Levin, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology, cell turnover slows down, skin recovers less easily from inflammation, important proteins such as collagen and elastin breakdown faster and less is made and the naturally found skin plumping sugar known as hyaluronic acid starts to decrease. Forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, bags under the eyes, and more prominent laugh lines called nasolabial folds are all new things you might notice in your 30s (oh, the joys!). Changing hormones also contribute to many of these changes, specifically a loss of estrogen that causes us to lose volume and bone mass in our skull, cheekbones, and jawline.

Serums are skin care products that are designed to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients to the skin. There are many different types of serums on the market that perform different jobs, ranging from hydration to skin brightening.

Lamelle
Correctives
VITA-C Lipid Serum

Using Vitamin C is important as you venture into your 30’s. Your skin goes through many hormonal and texture changes throughout your thirties and Vitamin C helps it though this journey. Topical antioxidants, (vitamin C and E) will help protect your skin from free radicals and oxidative stress, one of the main contributors to premature skin ageing. Free radicals are generated by sun exposure, smoking, urban pollution, and who knew that “even your own cell metabolism creates free radicals,” says dermatologist and founder of Eudelo, Dr Stefanie Williams.

Lamelle Vita-C Lipid Serum is a high-potency Vitamin C Serum that brightens and hydrates. This serum is particularly good for skins that haven’t been exposed to actives yet because of the way it is formulated – it is a well-tolerated Vitamin C Serum. It is light and is immediatley absorbed into the skin. It almost instantly leaves my skin brighter.

Two other Vit C serums I have used and enjoy are the ones below:

Lamelle
RA Serum

Vitamin A derivatives are the gold standard of topical anti-ageing care. They help optimise skin turnover and collagen production (from our 30s our skin cells get a bit ‘lazy’, i.e. the cell turnover slows down and collagen production declines, so it’s a good idea to start supporting these),” says. Dr Stefanie Williams. “At the cellular level, retinoids work by increasing collagen formation, decreasing breakdown of collagen, and normalizing cell turnover.”says Dr Levin. Retinoids are also key in terms of exfoliating the skin, collagen remodeling, and treating discoloration.

According to Dr Webster; At a concentration of 3%, Lamelle’s 3.0 RA Serum contains more Vitamin A than anyone would ever be able to deliver normal Vitamin A in. It’s been proven safe, effective and, with only a few drops applied at night, it provides better results in treating the signs of ageing than nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid. This is a perfect introductory product to retinol if you’ve never used one before, or for those who prefer a serum base to a cream base.

I am really enjoying it and seeing great results from this serum. I will certainly repurchase. I get mine from my skin therapist, Adele.

Another retinol serum I have tried is the Neutriherbs Retinol + Vitamin E serum. Also minimally invasive to the skin, this RA is a good starter serum for those who have yet to get stuck into actives. I don’t think I will repurchase this one.

Lamelle
HA Serum

Often, a serum is able to hydrate more effectively than even the heaviest creams. The molecules are able to truly penetrate the skin and hydrate on the deepest level, while the heavier creams more so sit on those top layers. Hydrating serums do not necessarily replace your moisturizer, but can boost the hydrating effects of your moisturizer. You may wonder why someone with oily skin would need to use an HA serum… well here is why; oily skin types (and even acne-prone skin) can also benefit from some targeted hydration. “For very oily skin types, a hydrating serum is preferred. These products are designed to hydrate with minimal emollient residue,” Kraffert said. Both mature and young skin alike can use a hydrating serum.

This HA serum from Lamelle not only boosts HA levels and HA production but it guards against the breakdown of existing hyaluronic acid in the skin. I have sadly just drained my last drop out of this bottle and need to repurchase. It feels like a dream on my skin – instant hydration.

Africology
Anti-Oxidant Serum

Antioxidant serums help protect your skin from the free radicals you’re exposed to on a daily basis. They also aid in the prevention of fine lines and other visible signs of aging, and can heal and repair skin.

This serum smells a little like metal, but I enjoyed it none the less just knowing how it was protecting my skin from further damage. I liked to add it into my Africology Night treatment moisturiser as a real treat on evenings my skin could do with some extra hydration. Alas it is finished now and I need to repurchase.

Lamelle
Brighter Concentrate Serum

This is a recent addition to my skincare regime and so I am yet to see the true benefits of long-term use, but Lamelle Brighter Concentrate is said to be a powerful corrective serum that assists the complex problem of hyperpigmentation with an innovative blend of conventional and unique peptide ingredients. Ideal for all skin types with pigmentation concerns.

I have heard great things about this particular serum and so am expectant of real improvements in my remaining pigment and dark spots.

NB: Since the ingredients in serums can be pretty potent, consider any potential skin sensitivity before trying a new product.
